These off-road vehicle convertible models are available
It was worth a try, but off-road vehicle convertibles are such a niche segment that there is almost no manufacturer left that offers such a model. We'll tell you which models are still available and what an SUV convertible is actually supposed to bring.
If you're interested in an off-road convertible, you unfortunately don't have a choice. Especially with new cars, it looks bad, here only VW currently offers a real convertible model, the Jeep Wrangler comes with a convertible-like, huge folding roof and is also included. Due to the small number, we also have classic SUV models on offer for you:
Which off-road vehicles are available as convertibles?
Convertible off-road vehicles are rarely seen on the roads and this is due to the fact that hardly any manufacturers are active in this segment. It is no longer necessary to say, because there was a time when there was a trend for SUV convertibles.
In the meantime, this has changed drastically. Customers stay away, convertibles have a hard time even without off-road vehicle flair. Currently, there are only two models: the VW T-Roc Convertible and the Jeep Wrangler.
If you want to take a look around the used car market, you will find a few more convertible off-road vehicles. For example, there is the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Convertible, the Suzuki Vitara X-90 or the Nissan Murano Cross Convertible.
In the following, we will introduce you to these models in more detail:
VW T-Roc Cabrio
The only real representative of an off-road vehicle convertible is the VW T-Roc Cabrio. Although off-road vehicle is exaggerated, because the SUV does not have all-wheel drive. Since the T-Roc sells really well as a closed model, the consequence was logical – a convertible.
In order not to make it even stranger than it already is, VW at least sticks to important points: fabric top, space for four people and a low price. Accordingly, it is not surprising that the T-Roc Cabrio is (almost) the only model on the new car market since 2019 - and relatively successfully.
Jeep Wrangler
Unlike the T-Roc Convertible, the Jeep Wrangler is a genuine off-road vehicle, but not a real convertible. We take it in anyway, because with the huge electric folding roof you actually feel like you're in a real convertible. Despite its robust charm, for which all off-road vehicle fans love it, it has arrived in the modern age. The infotainment is just as contemporary as the drives – the Wrangler can also be ordered as a plug-in hybrid. It is not a purely electric off-road vehicle, but at least it is.
With the Jeep Wrangler, you have to choose between six different soft top variants - and what does the choice fall on if not the folding roof? There are also other models with a bit of a convertible feeling – cars with panoramic roofs.
Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Cabrio (used)
In 2016, the off-road vehicle manufacturer Land Rover caused divided minds when it launched the Evoque as a convertible. The sporty, elegant SUV came with a fabric top, was also suitable for off-road use and had all-wheel drive.
The interior features high-quality materials and good equipment – unfortunately, the model was already discontinued in 2018 because the clientele stayed away. If you would still like to have an Evoque convertible, you can look around on the used car market, where the large SUV is already available from about 25,000 euros.
Suzuki Vitara X-90 (used)
Ahead of its time – at least as far as an SUV convertible is concerned – was the Suzuki Vitara X-90. It was built between 1995 and 1997 and was both off-road capable and equipped with a removable hardtop, which then made it a convertible.
Oh, even then, demand was rather low, which is why it was discontinued after two years of construction. Nevertheless, a small fan base has formed, which is probably not least due to its rather unusual design. Frameless panes and the T-roof roof are something special. You can have the Vitara X-90 used for about 5,000 euros, but usually with very high mileage.
Nissan Murano Cross Cabrio (used)
A few years earlier, in 2011, Nissan launched an SUV convertible with the Murano Cross Convertible. If the model doesn't mean anything to you, it's not surprising, because the Murano Cross Cabrio was not offered in Germany at all. However, it was also not convincing on the American market and was therefore only built until 2015.
As a used car, it is difficult to get in Germany.
Why are there few off-road convertibles?
The mixture of off-road vehicle and convertible is not one that goes down well with the majority of the population. It's difficult, because if you want an off-road vehicle, you don't really want to be on the road without a roof over your head. Accordingly, the customer base is very small, so the marketing of off-road vehicle convertibles is not profitable for most manufacturers.
Which manufacturers offer 4×4 convertibles?
Currently, there are only two manufacturers in the new car sector that offer convertible SUVs:
- Volkswagen
- Jeep
Are there convertibles with all-wheel drive?
The new car market is currently equipped with only a few convertible models and apart from the Jeep Wrangler with folding roof – which is not 100 percent convertible – there is no model with all-wheel drive.
What alternatives to off-road convertibles are there?
If you are disappointed because there are so few models, you have to ask yourself what is more important: off-road capability or roofless driving. If it's the first point, then of course there is plenty of choice of real off-road vehicles and not quite so off-road SUV models. Here you will find what you are looking for with almost every manufacturer.
If you want to be a car for the rough in general, then there are also some good pick-up models.
